Self-Tape Auditions: What you need to know and How to get Started!

Jessika Monique

So, what exactly is a self-tape audition, and how can you make sure your child’s self-tape stands out from the rest?

What Is a Self-Tape Audition?

A self-tape audition is essentially a video recording of an actor performing a scene or reading lines from a script. Casting directors review these tapes to determine if the actor is right for the role. It’s an opportunity for actors to audition from anywhere, allowing talent from all over the country to be considered without the need for travel.

Self-tapes give you more control over your audition—you can record it multiple times to get it right before submitting. However, the quality of your self-tape is crucial. Poor lighting, bad sound, or distracting backgrounds can take away from the performance and might hurt your chances.

Essential Equipment for a Successful Self-Tape

To ensure your child’s self-tape stands out, you’ll need the right tools. Here’s what you’ll need:

1. Camera or Smartphone: A high-quality camera or a smartphone with a good camera can work. Most smartphones these days can shoot in HD, which is perfect for self-tapes. Make sure the video is clear and focused.

2. Tripod: A tripod is essential to keep your camera steady. No shaky footage allowed! It also allows you to adjust the height and angle to capture your child at their best. Another option, which is one of my favorites, is a ring light. With a ring light, you get the lighting and tripod all in one, and they come with an attachment to hold your phone and/or camera. We purchased ours on Amazon.

3. Good Lighting: Natural light is great, but if you’re recording indoors or in low light, investing in a ring light or softbox lights can make a big difference. The goal is even lighting, so there are no harsh shadows on your child’s face.

4. Microphone: Good audio quality is just as important as the video. If your camera or phone doesn’t have great built-in audio, consider using an external microphone to capture clear sound.

5. Plain Background: A clutter-free background is key. Casting directors want to focus on your child, not what’s behind them. Use a solid-colored backdrop (light blue or gray works well). Avoid white, black, or overly patterned backgrounds. Amazon sells the double-sided pop-up backdrop that is blue and gray.

6. Audition Reader: For self-tape auditions, someone may need to read the other lines in the scene. Make sure they speak clearly but don’t overshadow your child’s performance.

Tips for a Professional Self-Tape

• Framing: Frame your child from the chest up (a medium close-up) for most auditions unless specified otherwise. Make sure the camera (or phone) is turned horizontal (sideways), and not vertical (up and down).

• Eye Line: Make sure your child is not looking directly into the camera but slightly off to one side (where the reader is).

• Quiet Environment: Eliminate any background noise and distractions.

• Multiple Takes: Don’t be afraid to do multiple takes until your child feels comfortable with their performance. However, don’t overdo it; sometimes the first or second take captures the right energy.

Self-taping gives your child a unique opportunity to show off their talent on their own time and terms. By making sure you have the right equipment and paying attention to quality, you can help them stand out in the competitive world of casting.

Self-tape auditions are here to stay, and mastering the process is key to success in today’s entertainment industry.
